I identify as a queer woman. I am a trans ally and committed to social justice.
Are you looking for a counsellor experienced in working with LGBTQ clients?
It can be challenging for many people who don't fit the presumed "norm" to strive to come to terms with and live as sexually diverse and/or gender diverse. This can be due to society being heteronormative and cisnormative where, unless we state otherwise, we are assumed to be straight and cisgender.
What is Gender and Sexual Diversity Counselling?
In my practice I use the theory of Gender and Sexual Diversity (GSD) Counselling, which is recognised as a more modern and broader approach than traditional LGBT Affirmative Counselling. I feel this approach more openly accepts numerous identities and practices. Rather than affirming a label or encouraging "coming out", GSD counselling explores who you are and how you want to live your life and who you want to know about your gender and sexual feelings. This can sometimes include labels but is not restricted to this.
What if I want to talk about other issues not linked to my gender/sexuality?
This is absolutely fine and welcomed. Although Gender and Sexual Diversity may be part of who you are, many people choose to come to my practice to talk about other issues not directly linked to their identity. Above all, my approach is about providing a safe and open-minded space to enable you to express who you are or want to be without the fear of prejudice and judgement.
